It wasn't exactly a challenge. I love reading! But medical school makes you half-illiterate. You become well-versed in the language of body parts and illnesses and drugs, but otherwise your language skills regress (spelling included heh). You are well-read on pneumonia and heart disease, but you scarcely read anything else except for Harry Potter once a year before the movie comes out. I just felt like I needed to make a conscious effort to read more non-medical stuff.
As of five minutes ago, I've finished 72 novels, for a total of 28,189 pages. I'm an unabashed bookworm. :D
So far, I've found myself two new favorite authors: Michael Palmer and Lisa See. I've also grown fond of the characters of Special Agent Pendergast (Lincoln and Child), Dr. Jon Smith of Ludlum's Covert-One novels and Dexter the lovable psychopath. My favorite novel for the year is Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold.
For a complete list of the books I've read this year, read on. =)
